 GIS and GIS Day Explained

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system that allows for the creation, storing, analysis and management of spatial data and related attribute information. GIS uses vector and raster data layers to not only create just about any kind of map, but to answer complex geographical questions through spatial analysis.

Even though we may not realize it, GIS is a part of our every day lives. From emergency route planning, to finding the most suitable neighbourhood to buy a house, to protecting our natural resources to even locating the closest shopping mall, GIS can make simple and complex tasks easier. With the right data, the possibilities are endless.

GIS Day serves to increase awareness of Geographic Information Systems and the importance they play in our lives. As an integral part of Geography Awareness Week, GIS Day is meant to appeal to everyone, from the general public to students and faculty from a broad range of disciplines. At Western, the event will showcase how the technology is applied in academic research, business applications, health, government and municipal management and much more.
