Research Interests

Housing and economic development; Urban development and policy analysis; Regional and local economic development policy and planning;  Third World development issues (esp. Africa)

Current Research

My current research focus is on economic development strategies of cities. In particular, I am interested in how cities are competing within international markets, attracting investment and labour to promote economic growth and enhancing the economic and fiscal health of their communities. I welcome applications from masters students interested in the topic of economic development and specifically those are who are interested in examining Ontario cities. I also welcome students who are interested in examining the impacts of provincial policies on the economic development efforts of cities. Finally I welcome masters students with their own research plan.

Research Interests

Social construction of risk, community responses to technological hazards, renewable energy policy, noxious facility siting, and methodology

Current Research

I am interested to work with students on projects related to the risk perception and behaviours associated with of technological hazards – particularly in the areas of renewable energy (e.g., wind turbines, waste-to-energy, community energy planning). Research Interests

Migration, gender, international development, Southern Africa

Current Research

I specialize in international development, with a regional focus on Southern Africa. My current research addresses three main themes, each from a gender perspective: migration-development linkages, xenophobia, and urban food security. I am interested in supervising graduate students on topics related to these themes, preferably in Southern Africa or, for migration, in countries of immigrant destination. Examples of my current graduate students' thesis topics are “Refugee livelihoods in Cape Town” and “Gender, migration and remittances in Botswana”.

I am looking for students interested in pursuing Masters level research in the area of land use planning and GIS. Possible thesis research topics include: (1) Web-based spatial decision support systems for land use-suitability analysis (GIS and programming skills required); (2) GIS and spatial statistics for crime analysis; (3) GIS and location-allocation methods for analyzing location patterns of the public and private sector facilities (e.g., health care, education, retailing).

Remote sensing and GIS

Current Research

My research interests are in remote sensing. Current projects include: a) 2D and 3D urban feature extraction from high resolution optical and LiDAR remote sensing images and its applications in hazard studies; b) Development of object-based classification algorithms for man-made and natural feature extraction; c) Polarimetry SAR data analysis for land use and land cover mapping and feature extraction; d) Hyperspectral data analysis for urban and wetland vegetation change detection and applications; Remote sensing applications in urban, mountainous and wetland areas.
