Research Areas

Political ecology, biofuels, East Africa

Research Interests

Much of my current work focuses on the political ecology of biofuels. On one level this means studying the outcomes of increased biofuel crop production for livelihoods, ecologies and food security across scales. On another level it means considering how the discourses attached to climate change and competing interpretations of development have influenced patterns of governance, investment, land acquisition and resistance related to biofuels.

More broadly I am interested in land use and the global governance of environmental change. I have a persistent side interest in the politics of knowledge and communication of environmental issues. At different times this has expressed itself through work on scenario analysis, experiential education, global environmental assessment reports and community radio. Regionally I am drawn to East Africa, especially Kenya.
