About The Geography Internship

The Department of Geography offers an Internship course for those students interested in gaining practical workplace experience as part of their undergraduate program. Students in the internship will spend 8 to 16 months (between May of one year to August of the next year) working in a degree-related position, between the third and fourth year of their academic studies. Any Geography student who is completing third year, has at least a 70% average in second year and is permitted to work in Canada, may enrol in the internship course.

Organizations will post jobs through CareerCentral (careercentral.uwo.ca) during the November to July period. These jobs are reserved only for students enrolled in internship. Each company or organization selects and interviews its candidates and then makes job offers to the students through The Career Centre Internship Coordinator. The first round of job offers are presented in late February and then continue into the summer months. As an alternative to these job postings, students may instead find their own “direct match” employment. These positions must involve degree-related work experience and meet the criteria of the internship course.

A key strength of the internship is its length. Unlike a traditional four month co-op, an 8-16 month placement provides interns with the opportunity to work on long-term advanced projects and allows employers a significant amount of time to assess students. Students enrolled in other departments who have completed other programs’ internships at Western have reported feeling that they are better motivated and have a well-crystallized plan for their careers after gaining valuable work experience and contacts in the workplace.
