Evaluation
The evaluation for this course has three components:
- Employer Performance Evaluation submitted by the employer on or before September 30 2011. (For a suggested format for the performance evaluation form click here).
- A written Technical Report focusing on the learning achieved during the placement; submitted to the course coordinator on or before August 31 2011.
- An Oral Presentation; dates to be negotiated with the course coordinator for September and October 2011.
All the components will be graded on a pass/fail basis and you have to get a pass on all of them in order to pass the course.
Technical Report (see Course Outline)
Your report will be 10-12 pages long, double-spaced, 12 font. Your report must contain the following:
- a brief overview of the company/organization you worked for
- a description of the work environment
- a description of the work you completed, projects you worked on
- a description of how your learning to date (within and outside of geography) assisted in your placement
- a description of knowledge and skills you acquired while working
If there are issues related to confidentiality or proprietary rights related to your work, please contact the course coordinator immediately in order that alternative arrangements can be made.
Your report may contain the following:
- A comparison of how well prepared for the workforce you were at the beginning of your placement versus how well prepared you feel now
- How do you think the internship has helped prepare you for your 4th year?
- How has the internship influenced your career goals?
- How might the internship program be improved to better prepare students for placements?
- Photos of equipment, workplace environment, and people are encouraged.
Since we would like to use these on our web site, we would appreciate your efforts to secure a release (for a photo release form click here).
Oral Presentation (see Course Outline)
You will provide a 5 minute presentation with 3-5 minutes for questions afterwards. We will encourage other Geography students to attend in order that they can learn about the internship course from your experience. The Course Coordinator, Internship Program staff, and Geography faculty and staff will also attend/be invited. Your presentation is not expected to cover all the topics covered in your paper. You are advised to focus attention on those aspects of your placement that you believe others will be most interested in, such as:
- a typical work day
- your most significant/enjoyable achievement
- what you liked/disliked
- interesting opportunities (e.g. travel, professional development)
- future career goals
